The short answer, counted from the atlas
Are peptides legal?
The short answer
Approved peptide drugs are legal with a prescription. The popular unapproved ones mostly are not, in the U.S. or in the other countries we track.
Of the 19 peptides and related compounds Peptlas tracks, 1 can be compounded legally in the U.S. today (Sermorelin). 14 are in limbo: nominated, recommended or taken off a restricted list, but not cleared for compounding. 4 are restricted.
Outside the U.S. the answer is simpler: the UK restricts all 19, the EU all 19, Canada 18 and Australia 11. In tested sport, WADA prohibits 14 of the 19.

Legal to do what?
“Legal” means different things depending on who is doing what. Here is the U.S. federal answer, action by action.
| If you want to | The U.S. federal answer | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Get an FDA-approved peptide drug, such as semaglutide (Wegovy) or tirzepatide (Zepbound) | Legal with a prescription. FDA approval is what makes a drug legal to sell and prescribe. | FDA - Drugs@FDA (approved drugs database) |
| Have a U.S. pharmacy compound it | Only if the ingredient is eligible: part of an FDA-approved drug, covered by a USP monograph, or on FDA’s 503A bulks list (Category 1 while that list is built). Of the 19 we track, 1 qualifies today: Sermorelin. | FDA - 503A bulk drug substances: Category 1 and Category 2 eCFR - 21 CFR 216.23 (503A bulk drug substances list) |
| Sell it for people to use, without FDA approval | Not legal. FDA treats it as an unapproved new drug under section 505(a) of the FD&C Act, and it sends warning letters to sellers. | FDA - warning letter to Royal Peptides LLC (Aug 24, 2026) |
| Sell it labeled “for research use only” | Same answer when the product is aimed at people. In August 2026 FDA told one such seller the label did not matter: its own website showed the products were “intended to be drugs for human use”. | FDA - warning letter to Royal Peptides LLC (Aug 24, 2026) |
| Import it for your own use | Illegal in most circumstances, FDA says. Its staff can allow narrow exceptions: a serious condition with no treatment available in the U.S., no more than a three-month supply, and a U.S. doctor responsible. | FDA - Personal importation |
| Possess it | None of the 19 is a federal controlled substance: none appears in the DEA’s schedules, so the Controlled Substances Act does not reach them. FDA enforcement in this space targets the people making, marketing and selling them. | eCFR - 21 CFR part 1308 (DEA schedules of controlled substances) |
| Use it in tested sport | Prohibited for 14 of the 19 under WADA’s list. | WADA - 2027 Prohibited List published (Sep 21, 2026) |
Federal law, in plain words. States license pharmacies and can add rules of their own; Peptlas tracks federal and national regulators and has not verified a state rule that changes these answers. This describes how the rules are structured. It is not legal advice.

What the labels mean: In limbo is the one headlines get wrong. Moved on paper - nominated, removed from a restricted list, or recommended by an FDA committee - but not added to the 503A list. The headline implies a change; the legal status has not moved.

Why headlines say “legal” when the law has not changed
In July 2026 an FDA advisory committee recommended 6 of 7 peptides for the 503A list, and headlines read it as approval. The votes are advisory. As of Oct 9, 2026 (ET) the FDA has added none of the 6, so none became legal to compound. Before any could be, the FDA would have to accept the recommendation and finish notice-and-comment rulemaking. The vote-by-vote results and what an advisory vote actually changes have the detail.
Asked and answered
- Are peptides legal in the U.S.?
- Approved peptide drugs are, with a prescription. Of the 19 peptides and related compounds Peptlas tracks, 1 can be compounded legally today (Sermorelin); 14 are in limbo and 4 are restricted. Selling any of them for human use without FDA approval is not legal.
- Did the FDA legalize peptides in 2026?
- No. In July 2026 an FDA advisory committee recommended 6 of 7 peptides for the 503A list. The votes are advisory, and as of Oct 9, 2026 (ET) the FDA has added none of them, so none became legal to compound.
- Is it illegal to buy peptides?
- Selling unapproved peptides for human use is illegal, and FDA says importing drugs for personal use is illegal in most circumstances. None of the 19 compounds Peptlas tracks is a federal controlled substance, and enforcement targets sellers. That describes how the rules work; it is not legal advice.
- Are research peptides legal?
- A “research use only” label does not make a peptide legal to sell for human use. In August 2026 the FDA told sellers using that label that their products were unapproved new drugs.
- Are peptides legal in the UK, the EU, Canada and Australia?
- Mostly not. Of the 19 compounds Peptlas tracks, the UK restricts all 19, the EU all 19, Canada 18 and Australia 11.
- Are peptides banned in sport?
- WADA prohibits 14 of the 19 compounds Peptlas tracks. Check the compound’s own entry for the class it falls under.
